Merit-Scholarships
Merit-scholarships are a principal source if "free money" for college.
Every college or university has a number of departments that prospective students can access in funding college education.
Rarely does one centralized office administer all the free education funding sources available. Typically, each department handles its own programs and each may have to be contacted separately.
Acceptance Process – In the optimum chronology of college funding, it is a good idea to apply for scholarships and grants prior to accepting admission to a college or university. Early admissions may hinder being accepted for free funding. Reason: Since one of the objectives of offering scholarships is to attract prospective students, if you have already been accepted, there is less of an incentive to offer you a scholarship The Profile - is a supplemental financial aid application form used by over 300 colleges and universities to guide them in awarding non-federal student aid. It is administered by the College Board’s College Scholarship Service (CSS) and should be completed by students applying for financial aid from any college that uses the CSS/Financial Aid Profile Service. Remember, scholarships, grants, awards, and student loans are always available to both undergraduate and graduate students at whatever level – freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or post-graduate. Tuition Discounts Many colleges offer tuition discounts. The reasons could vary from having a family member associated with a certain organization to being a member of an ethnic group. Apply for Merit Scholarships You will be surprised to find the variety of education funding available. It is always a good strategy to apply for merit awards and scholarships. Students with high SAT scores and GPA are on the first tier of receiving any merit based scholarship. But even if you do not have the best scores, you can still win awards and receive scholarships. Many factors besides good grades come into play in determining who gets the money. When searching for scholarships, review the eligibility requirements. Each award has its restrictions, be it ethnic heritage, gender, residency requirements, among others. Note any qualifications or restrictions that may apply.
In addition to merit-scholarships, other scholarship opportunities are available.
